About Lockyer Valley Turf Club

The history of the Lockyer Valley Turf club

With a rich history that dates back to the 1870s, Lockyer Valley Turf Club has been delivering true country-style horse races for over a century. Our roots can be traced back to the renowned Farmers Cup, which first took place in 1878 and marked the beginning of a proud legacy.

In the early 1900s, Gatton established its own derby, with the notable victory of Romanlike in the Gatton Derby of 1914, a mile-long race that drew participants from as far as Brisbane and Toowoomba. Throughout the years, the club has witnessed remarkable races, including the Gatton Shire Cup triumph of Elite Sparkle in 1993, the Bonza Liquor Dealers Maiden in 1984, the Gatton Centenary Cup in 1955, and the Errol Bachman Memorial Trophy in 1992.

Once scattered across Grantham, Helidon, Tenthill, and Laidley, the race tracks of the Lockyer Valley now consolidate in Gatton, making it the sole racecourse in the region. The Lockyer Race Club membership board was established in 1948, with A. Fitzgerald serving as the President until 1974. Over the years, the club has undergone various name changes and is now proudly known as the Lockyer Valley Turf Club.
